Over the course of last week I shot off to London to create some Tape installation for The fashion designer Ashley Marc Hovelle. The set was his studio in Mornington crescent where He would be launching his new range of clothes for Harvey nichols. I spent two days creating large scale versions of his logos all across the walls of the space as well as some poattern work for the entrance. Lots of fun.Ali G turned up to.Not sure why.

Isan:A collaberative project

Over the course of three weeks i worked with davy,hannahand jane to create a 10' and two 7inch records and a music video.Here is the main part that i worked on with davy.The three records were worked on with the idea of using braille and negative space as the band/album we were working with (ISAN,lucky cat) was created with the idea of using the silence in the music as a new layer and that every noise,space meant something to someone. The video will be posted when i get it though it needs a lot of reworking (as do the covers)

So a month or so i decided what should have been the middle page spread for the brighton university newspaper the verse.The realauch of the paper had a good team behind it and publishes every month? (i'll get back to you on that) none the less i when i went to have a look at the paper i was surprised to see my illustration as a wraparound cover.Some designers mistake.Anyway.Look out for the new paper around uni out this Friday.Alot of love,research and passion goes into what everyone does there.

Light Show exhibition

Our final end of second year ehibition went up last week. The Brief was based around the theme of Light.For my piece i developed a skill i had tried out while i was in my own studio a few months back.basing the pattern loosely around crystals and the way they reflect light i created this piece.

also what you don't see when you look at this piece is the four hours of precarious balancing i had to do get through to put it up. Thankfully i lasted without any serious mishaps,apart from almost dropping some scissors on someone.

Some other pieces of work that especially liked from the exhibition included this piece of work by Pat Bradbury, whose currently doing an internship at the pretty special YCN which you can follow here

My extension studies for this semester of this year was Self publishing.Part of this Project was to create a page for a large collaberation for our whole group.The subject of the zine was points on what makes a book interesting and exciting.We each had one word which we had to illustrate/design an a5 piece for.My word was communicate,I chose to mess around with the word communicate on an old scanner while moving it around.Thus the word communicate is struggling to communicate as its not as easy to use as usual.Also while i'm writing about it i just want to mention the way its printed.Using a risograph printer gives a lovely quality.I definatly recomment researching it.

A day of trains and woods

A group project created from a list of russian railway stations.The siberian sleeper train runs through the heart of Russia with about 16 stops.We took the idea of this train and created an installation in the woods.My specific part to play in this installation was to create a toy train out of white card.The overall installation was just the start of the project.We then had a second week to come up with a publication which i'll photograph in a bit.

first off can anyone tell me what this is?Its just been built on the level as part of Brighton fringe festival? All i can imagine it being at the moment is a terrifying walkthrough experience? imagine strobe lights with zombie like people running around it and banging there fists against the glass? I'm sure its a much more mundane idea but if it were up to me.I'd go along those lines.

Lloyds TSB-Art of Nurture

A competition for LLoyds TSB that was set by the university."Art of Nurture" is a competition that has been set every year over the last few years for lloyds TSB,They set a number of themes from students to work from.I worked under the theme "working together" creating a excessively complicated pattern on A2 paper unsing the tetradic colour theory i starting from the inside of the pattern working out using the colour chart to find a complimenting colour for the inner circle of the pattern so that when i came to the final outter circle the whole circle every colour in the circle worked together to create one Bright colourful image that reflects each part of LLoyds business.

Another batch project that we were set for university this year was to create the packaging,tracklisting,and theme for the mixtape.Choosing the theme of otherworldly music i created six hand cut packages for my cases,creating three individual sleeves for each case (fifteen handcut sleeves in total) each with a different part of the overall aesthetic cut

into in.The pattern was aimed to look along the lines of u.f.o light.I also handcut the individual names of the tracklisting into each sleeve.As well as this i created six handcut a3 posters.Overall one big scalpol blister.

for this uni project we were set the task of creating a batch of 5 books all for £5 each.This books could be created on any subject and any medium as long as they accomplished the brief of creating a book.I took the brief and decided to create a "d.iy fancy dress" book,for the brief i created a set of 8 costumes and then photographed in my studio,each book was handbound as well.This was probably my favourite image out of the set

A couple of weeks ago I art directed created a bit of prop work on a photoshoot with the Brighton based band The half sisters.going out on a freezing afternoon they were fantastic to work with and even after freezing in the cold in their (amazing) dress's for at least twenty minutes still had smiles on their faces.Special thanks go to phoebe who was the photographer for the shoot who did a fantastic job and was generally a wonder to work with.

For the "all you need is..." exhibition i produced a a2 mask created out of intricately cut geometric shapes.i started my piece by creating a basic diamond shape and worked my way through a complicated handmade grid to create an intricate maze of shapes.The night went really well with a large turnout from family friends and other people off our course.If you have a moment get yourself over to

This is a poster designed by the talented Paul Layzell currently studying with me at Brighton.

Level two Illustration put on an exhibition at the space in Brighton's Artist Residence with the title "All you need is..." this involved students creating pieces on the object or thing that they couldn't live without.The always "on it" Pat bradbury organised the general outing and was helped by alot of other helpers from our class. second part of my project.again starting with "reality is merely an illusion" i created a fictional character, and using this character created a series of illustrations based on her dreams. so anyway here.I present to you.The floating heads of some triangle clan. But in all seriousness these took me a solid day of drawing each.they still in the process of being finished ( i need to touch up the thing that looks like a penis nose and general bits and bobs) at the end of the project i will have 10 A2 illustrations which i will probably turn into a book /zine or something along those lines

For the latest project at university we have been set the task of either creating a 3 minute animation or 10 A2 images,With my lack of knowledge of animation i chose the route more travelled and have been working on ten images under the title of Einstein's quote

"Reality Is merely an illusion"

Setting a brief for myself to communicate to the world around me of how i'd like to see people if i was god and could meld and bend peoples faces to my will.So far this has obviously entailed me doing alot of papercutting. For some reason i find a long process very therapeutic. though it can be dissapointing if i'm not happy with the result as i spend so much time going through the process. These pieces so far are up to par.Tomorrow i'll be adding alot of finer details onto the images.

Sean Parker is a prolific piece of work currently making his way through second year at LCC.He Beavers his way through many different types of media while still continuing a strong distinctive style that he seems to have been developing for a few years now.I'm normally amazed by his strong composition work with his collages and generally handrawn style. His blog is updated almost daily with something new that he's been up to and it makes me jealous/inspired just to see a friend continually producing such strong work. Get on it.

This has recently been chucked all over the internet,but its so well done i though i needed to show a few people who may not have seen it.These photographs are by Corrie White.Using a macro lens he photographs coloured water droplets as they splash into say a cup of whatever it is he's using at the time.They look so unusual.almost alien,the varying shapes and sizes he's created are amazing

So for my extension studies i am currently doing Fashion.I took this mainly so i could improve my sewing machine skills and general help my costume making.Our final project for the semester is to create our own garment,this could be whatever we want,from a pair of underwear to a skirt,or hat.Today we were making basic garments out of paper,this is what fashion designers use to get an idea of the basic shape of the garment and the pieces of fabric they will need to cut out/sew together to make.

The Half Sisters

These beautiful girls are the Half Sisters,A wonderful little Brighton band who are currently rolling down the road towards the big time.Freya rose,Isadora and Fifi are possibly the most upbeat people you will ever meet.Also there drive to get somewhere is pretty much second to none.These girls seriously push the boundaries of how prolific and dedicated you can be.I met them a few months back at an exhibition my old housemate (thats luke tudor to everyone that knows him) put on.The girls were playing acoustically and realy blew me away.I got talking to them and the conclusion of this conversation was that we would work together and i would create a set for a photoshoot for them.After a month of tooing and froing with ideas.A final piece has been finalised.Photoshoot next saturday.Watch this space.In the mean time listen to The Sisters music

So after a week of arduous cutting out and long working days i finally completed my entry for the Brighton Open day Poster competition.All of second year Illustration and Graphic design had to create a poster.We were allowed to collaborate or work on our own.whichever we felt would work better.Heres a few quick snaps of my poster being made.I ended up creating a poster that had a hugely lengthy process behind it.As you can see.A print out in A0 turned into three long days of cutting out.

My final piece is reflecting the studio environment while still showing a creative, complicated process.I experimented with lots of ways of shooting the cut out card.such as projecting light through it onto a wall and lighting it directly from the back.A good start to the year i think and now onto the next project.

So the last two weeks have seen me working alot more than last year,and producing work that i feel's alot better standard.we're currently in the process of designing a poster for The Brighton open day poster,The poster has to be suitable for prospective students over all the courses run in the Grand Parade Campus.I went down to route of creating a 3d piece,My final idea changed alot through the whole process.starting with the idea of cutting patterns into type to and covering the patterns in coloured acetate.After cutting out huge amounts of triangles for three days i finally finished creating the type finishing with serious scalpol finger.Heres a cheeky glimpse at what it'll be like

This lovely lady is amazing!Having worked for her for a week back in Easter i was welcomed back for a couple of days to her beautfiul abode near angel station.The aim of the two days: to
create a bit of advertising for Fred's recent nomination for a "DAZED BLOG AWARD"
this involved running around town trying to find t-shirts that matched napoleon dynamites "vote for pedro" t-shirt exactly.After going to every shop from Marble Arch to American apparel on Oxford street i finally got hold of a couple,the next lengthy process was working out how we were going to print on these.after cutting out each individual letter from fabric transfer paper we then created a template to make sure that the kerning was correct.The next day involved a strenuous (all my fault) photoshoot with the amazing Dan Wilton (again, a fantastic photographer) with a large amount of outstanding people modelling the shirt to be thrown all over facebook.These were a few of the end products.If you have a moment please vote for Fred.she deserves as much recognition as possible.

So the other day i was privilaged enough to go to the private viewing for Jim stoten's new range of collages and illustrations at supersuperficial in covent garden.Creating a wonderful range of worlds using images from old national geographics and bits and bobs he finds in jumble sales and markets interspersed with brighlty coloured felt tip illustrations Jims exhibition was massively inspiring.If anyones around London in the next week i urge you to go an have a look.You can look at them for hours and still find little gems hidden in the chaos.Being a Brighton graduate himself i was pleased to here that Jim has been drafted in to teach second year illustration in september.It'll be good to get his views and i'm really looking forward to the coming year.

The starting project for this project was "things that fly" and the aim was to experiment with media and techniques that you wouldn't usually use.I began by looking into costume design as i thought this would be a good project to start delving deeper into my love of set design and costume design.Sketching out this costume was the easy pasrt,a good four days slog of putting the costume together finally brought it into real life.Although i'm happy with these photos i do still believe that theres alot more i can get from this costume. I.e take photos in different settings.we'll see how it goes

At my home in Brighton we have what we call a "cave room". This room is basically a massive waste of space and because the landlord is too lazy to do anything with it over the past few months it has accumulates alot of junk that we have picked up (a t.v from the street,a few roads signs....general stuff like that) but the one time it has become useful to me was when we rented out the university lights to do a photoshoot in there for a group project we were working on.Now this project was called Let there be light and we were basically told to play around with light,composition,colour and generally experiment.After our group photoshoot i decided to do my own shoot (of a kind). My aim was to create a sense of power and horror using a model.I think though these are only a few of the photos from my shoot you can tell the mood is conveyed really well.The models muscles are clearly defined by the light while though his face is hidden most of the photos you can still see his mouth open wide in shock or "horror"

a few images from a photoshoot i did for a Brighton zine called showpony.The theme was D.I.Y so i created a suit of armor out of cardboard.Serious scalpol finger here.I think the final images came out really well as me and my friend Halim (the model) wrote a piece to go with it talking about how this was a secret superhero.Alltogether a pretty enjoyable day (though not so much for halim)

The urban knight

Has anyone ever thought if there was actually a man,women or child who believed they were a superhero. I'm not talking about the playboy millionaires with a messiah complex who could create amazing inventions. Things that could make them fly,make them run at the speed of light and shoot lasers from his eyes. No, I'm talking about one of us average Joe's, who have to scratch to get by, the bin men, the office drones, those of us who live at the bottom rung of society. What powers can we have? What secret identities should we create for ourselves?

Meet the urban Knight -a delusional,heavily armored nineteen year old. Running riot in central Brighton, this slightly deranged member of the public has somehow gained access to the police radio frequency and is helping out ( or disturbing the peace ) as much as he can.

The Urban Knight is the missing link, he looks for his sanctuary wherever possible, anywhere rural and vaguely relevant to his flimsy and quaint image. The Urban Knight's namesake is loosely true, for he is only urban by circumstance and not of choice.

Do not pity The Urban Knight, for he does not seek your pity, he can take your laughter, for he edures it from the packs of teens and the less well-mannered oiks. The Urban Knight will continue on with his cause, though the reason or logic behind it is not known, to him or anyone else for that matter. Some say he is to be hailed as a hero for his strongheaded perversion against everyday decorum, some say he is to be avoided because he may have a serious mental disorder and a breakdown is due any day now. But whatever the truth, The Urban Knight is still very intriguing and puts forward the question... aren't we all wearing an armor of sorts?

So the other day i bought a box of magnet shapes.This was pretty much the best buy of a few months,i planned on creating somehting with it,i just wasn't sure what so i began by creating some patterns as that probably a bit of an obsession at the moment,though after a few pretty successive patterns i decided to move on.

I decided finally that i would create a typeface out of these shapes,i then got seriously involved in making a huge range of letters using alot of varying shapes.

After this process i then put each image into illustrator and traces over each letter picking each sides colour to still keep the colour scheme except making it alot more vivid.
And this was the final outcome. A typeface fit for any thirteen year old

For a uni project we had to create an a2 poster.We were given a list of quotes and were allowed to pick one and create and kind of poster using and kind of technique. I used the line " imagining the unimaginable is the highest form of imagination.I turned my housemate into reptiles/alien type things,this was keeping along the theme of my flyer design as i wanted to experiment more and see what other final outcomes i could up with.

So a few weeks ago i had some work experience with the girls at Jiggery Pokery,Completly ripping these pictures from their blog i thought i'd show you what we were building for the opening window display at nation of shopkeepers. A bar that will be opening in leeds any day now. It'll be knocking out unusual things lke jumble sales and other cooky things like that. They pitched a window idea of a bright and garish hammage to Leeds.We found these amazing pieces of wrapping paper from deptford market

we were looking through old work of theirs and ended up mucking around with annagrams and ended up with this superb photo (well,maybe)And this is just a taster of what the window will be like.all glitter and bright colours.I can't wait to see the final piece,they just came back from leeds and the final piece will be on their blog within the next few days (and on my blog around that time as well)

Tunnel 228

These images are from an exhibition,art installment and performance piece in the tunnels under waterloo called tunnel 228. Run by the old vic,Punchdrunk and i think someone else (i don't have the book with all the detail with me).But basically back to the point,its amazing. Never have i been to something quite so ethereal and unique. The setting is amazing in itself with hidden rooms and beautiful lighting while the work compliments this with some hugely sinister pieces that almost seem out of this world.I've just checked the website and found out that its fully booked but basically if you ever get the chance to go (i have no idea how long its on for) you should definatly do it.

Fred Butler: part 2

So having not actually seen the end products of my three days working with Fred it was lovely to get an e-mail from her with a beautiful window display that i can honest say i've been involved in and worked hard on.

Fred recycled the huge black and white channel bag from an old project which fitted perfectly with the brief. This bag would act as a suit for a mannequin as Fred demonstrated pretty nicely when she had to turn the bag inside out last time

Our project for the next few days would be to create a miniature rainbow version of the bag that would act as a blanket for dog mannequin ( unfortunately its surprisingly hard to find a dog mannequin so she had to make do with having the smaller bag hanging over the shoulder of the larger one). Another product i helped Fred out was the packaging for her accessories. The end product is pretty fantastic

I've just spent £23 developing photos,there is no way I'm not putting some of them up on my blog for you all to see my easter holiday/start of spring happiness. Its been nice,These people are lovely.I'll probably keep spending money on disposable cameras. Expect more.

-try and make my canvas shoes smell less,even with odour eating shit in them.

So in the spirit of being back at uni (though i'm not sure for how long) i decided to finally get round to recording these masks i created for a brief a few weeks ago,creating with aztec designs in mind i created symetrical patterns and then transferred them onto these masks.I plan on giving to a band or something to play in,just something fun that will put them to use.

So the last three day i've been spent wandering in and out of the studio of Fred butler and "the two Andys" studio (sorry Andy's if you ever actually read this i am awful with names but you both seemed pretty nice) in Angel.Here are a few snaps from the last day working with her as i had to borrow my dads camera.

I was pretty much making these badboys for three days solidly,they'll be used to package all of Freds new range of accessories (ie necklaces,hats,headbands etc) They were sprayed silver.I think i made another three large ones that arn't in the photo.As well as this i made a whole lot of labels (below) Helped make a large gucci bag that was aimed to be put over the top of a model dog,Generally a huge amount of cutting with scalpols.

The piece above was made by one of Freds studio mates,made for the front cover of Amelia's magazine,pretty snazzy.One of the things that is beginning to strike me in the world of the creative industries is the use of space in peoples studios.Freds was no exception.All the walls were covered in work of some kind of work,with bookshelves covered in book full of inspiration as well as a huge shelving unit in the corner with everyones materials stashed away right to the ceiling.All in all a very good three days.

I want to die in a dramatic and terrifying night full of over sized bats,forests,damsels in distress and good looking American actors running around me screaming for there lives.

Working at Fred Butlers going pretty well,first day and I've been making oversized pyramids to put all her accessories in for the new range she's creating,seriously they look so good some of these things,i'm going to bring a camera tomorrow so I'll take a few snaps that i can show the world.

Also in the next month or two I'll have a shiny new website courtesy of the beautiful and amazing James Letharby because he's so clued up with dreamweaver and I'm not.

biggest mistake in my life

but its done now.Oh well.i know i seem very blasé about the whole situation,but to be honest there's not much else i can do.Its done now,may a well try and live with it.On a different note though my last week has been pretty amazing,full of meeting people who i haven't seen for a long time and understanding what i need to do for the rest of year because of these brief but important conversations.I won't go into naming names as to be honest i don't want to.Some things need to be kept to myself,but thanks,you know who you are.

After being away for pretty much a term i've realised how much i miss London (everything except the two hour rambles back home at two in the morning when all you want to do is sleep).This could be because everywhere becomes so much prettier when theres sun,or it could be because i miss the huge multi cultural society that it is,the amazing people in it and just generally being able to go exploring a new part of it whenever you want because its just that vast.(there should have been a comma somewhere in there i'm sure of it).Who knows.The main thing is that i love it,when uni ends (or i actually deem it a good idea to stick it out till the third year and get a BA) then its straight back to London to a nice little flat in peckham where i can sit with a cat,some tea,a book and a pen and live for the next few years as content as i ever could be.

On the work front i've got a few projects coming up that will need seeing to in the next few weeks and an essay (i must do this essay,i failed to hand in the last one)I also need to record all the work i've done this semester,it has been a lazy few weeks.This'll change.I promise

the birds are starting to sing now. 5:00 in the morning is a strange time.I enjoyed writing this though.
